Family Road Trip to San Antonio,TX
A few weeks ago we took a little spontaneous family road trip to San Antonio, TX. I love a fun family-filled trip even if it’s just for the weekend. San Antonio is about 3.5 hours away from our hometown. We did all the things that San Antonio has to offer and I am excited to tell you all about it! We stayed at the absolute cutest Airbnb, gorged out on some delicious food, visited and learned some rich history, enjoyed some memorable tourist destinations, and, of course, made lots of memories.
We love to travel as a family even if it’s somewhere local. Last year we took a lot of weekend trips all over the state of Texas. What I have really come to enjoy is staying at Airbnbs as a family. As much as I love a good hotel, staying in a house where we all have our space and rooms is refreshing. Most of all I love having a dinner table and kitchen to gather and eat as a family… THAT’S MY FAVORITE! When I travel I honestly can only eat out at restaurants so many times before I get burnt out and crave a home cooked meal. So when it comes to picking an Airbnb, I’m very picky. I know JUDGE ME if you must, but the place I pick has to have good reviews and good ratings, or I’m NOT staying there!
The Airbnb House
While looking for a place to stay in San Antonio I stumbled across this home hosted by Andrew. It is gorgeous in the inside and it has a pool and hot tub (BONUS!). The company I booked through was Mouse House Vacations and HERE IS A LINK TO THE HOUSE! This beautiful house had some of the coolest features that I knew my boys would love. First up, obviously THE POOL was a huge hit! The backyard was a whole vibe and it was so relaxing. The house was huge and basically each boy had their own room. This house is perfect for a family vacation for any amount of time. We enjoyed lots of quality time in the pool, backyard bbq, meals at the huge table, board games, and movies with their subscription sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Andrew and his wife Ronnie run the property and they are beyond helpful. I love a helpful management and if you needed them at any point you are one text away. Y’all know customer service is everything to me and Andrew and Ronnie are the best!!! They actually manage a lot of properties in the area and I look forward staying at another of their locations sometime soon.
DINNER ON THE RIVERWALK
So, full transparency, we didn’t eat out a lot. Since we had the Airbnb we looked forward to cooking in the beautiful stocked kitchen and eating “at home.” I wanted to try at least one restaurant in San Antonio so I asked y’all for some ideas. The most popular named restaurant was Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant and Margarita Bar. We had a tight schedule while we were there since I was doing a collab with Sea World, but one of the destination sites I wanted to go to was the Riverwalk so this restaurant was perfect! The Riverwalk at night is a whole vibe. If you’ve never been there, the Riverwalk is a maze of pedestrian streets one level down from the main streets in the center of the city. The walkways have a river in between them with no railing so people periodically fall in (hilarious). There are hotels and restaurants on either side of the river and boats that you can ride up and down the river. Definitely a “must see” in San Antonio!
The food at the Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Disclaimer – we are a Mexican food family and are VERY PICKY and harsh food critics, especially with Mexican food! This food was a 10/10… the meat was so tender and had incredible flavor. As an appetizer we tried the brisket queso and it was delish! Everyone got something a little different. Chris and I got fajitas for 2 (we rate them 10/10), Hunter got shrimp tacos (he rates them a 8/10), and Christian and Dalton got cheese enchiladas (they rated them a 9/10). If you are in San Antonio, TX and looking for a delicious Mexican restaurant to try… I can not recommend The Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant enough!
HISTORY
- THE ALAMO- The Alamo is a staple of Texas history and a site everyone needs to see in their lifetime. I have never seen it at night so that was an absolutely amazing treat. Right after we had dinner on the riverwalk we walked over to the Alamo. Unfortunately there was a lot of construction going on around the area so it was a bit of a mess, but we still enjoyed the majesty of this historical site.
- MISSIONS IN SAN ANTONIO- Every time we go out of town I always incorporate some history into our trip. If I don’t know what history is in a city, I will just google the city name and “history.” In this case I found that San Antonio has some famous missions. These sites were incredible and so breathtaking. San Antonio actually had more missions to see we just didn’t have time for them all.
