Halloween isn’t just one night a year — it’s a whole season of magic, nostalgia, and cozy-spooky fun. From decorating your home and baking festive treats to watching scary movies and planning a bestie photo shoot, there are endless ways to celebrate.

I put together this Halloween Bucket List to help you make the most of the season. Whether you’re celebrating with family, friends, or flying solo, these activities will give you all the cozy fall vibes and spooky thrills you’re craving.

🏠 Decorate for Halloween

Nothing sets the tone for October like decorating your home. Add pumpkins to the porch, string twinkle lights around the mantel, and mix in some vintage-inspired Halloween finds.

📖 Tell Ghost Stories

Grab some blankets, light a few candles, and gather around for an old-fashioned ghost story night. This works with kids (make it silly instead of scary) or with friends (lean into the spooky details).

Pro tip: Pair this with hot apple cider and a bowl of candy corn for the perfect cozy setup.

🎬 Watch a Scary Movie

You can’t do Halloween without a movie night (or three). I’ve already made it easy for you with three curated movie lists:

🎃 Carve a Pumpkin (or Try a Fun Alternative!)

Pumpkin carving is the ultimate Halloween tradition — but if scooping seeds and wielding knives isn’t your thing, don’t worry.

This year, I tried something new: a Stitched Pumpkin DIY. It’s a no-carve pumpkin project where you use yarn and pins to “stitch” a design right into your pumpkin. Think of it as handmade, nostalgic, and way less messy.

👻 Go Trick-or-Treating

Whether you’re going door-to-door with kids, handing out candy on your porch, or walking through your neighborhood to see decorations, trick-or-treating is pure Halloween magic.

And if you’re the candy-giver, why not make it extra fun? Create little themed bags, or hand out glow sticks along with candy for safety and spookiness.

🏚️ Visit a Haunted House

If you’re brave enough, a haunted house is one of the best adrenaline-pumping fall traditions. Check your local listings — many communities set up both kid-friendly “not-so-scary” houses and full-on fright fests for adults.

This one is such a fun tradition. Put together a little basket of Halloween goodies — candy, candles, socks, or small décor — and secretly drop it off at your neighbor’s porch with a “You’ve Been Booed!” note.

It’s a sweet way to spread festive cheer in your community.

🍰 Bake a Halloween Dessert

Every Halloween bucket list needs a sweet treat or two. If you’re looking for inspiration, try one of my favorites:

🎉 Go to a Halloween Party

From elaborate costumes to themed food, Halloween parties are always a good time. Don’t stress about throwing the perfect one — even a small get-together with chili in the crockpot and a scary movie playing counts! We had a tradition for years of hosting a Halloween party for my kids- until the kids got to old and were expecting certain things from a party that my party will NEVER have. lol.

🍬 Pass Out Candy

Sometimes the best part of Halloween is simply staying home and handing out candy. Dress up, set the mood with spooky music, and enjoy seeing all the kids’ costumes.

Tip: If you want to be the house everyone remembers, hand out king-size candy bars or add in a fun non-candy option like glow sticks.

PS. This is what Trick-or-Treaters see when they come to my house- by the time Halloween is here- I am sooo excited and reason for Christmas. I am going to try my best this year to leave it up till the day of though!

✂️ Make a Halloween Craft

If you’re crafty like me, Halloween is the best excuse to get creative. Two of my favorite DIYs this year:

📸 Bestie Halloween Photo Shoot

This one might be my favorite bucket list item. Grab your bestie, throw on some ghost sheets and sunglasses, and head outside with a pumpkin pail for a “Ghost Photo Shoot.” It’s silly, creative, and makes for the best Instagram photos.

I filmed our shoot and it’s a 10/10 I recommend. Not only were the results worth it- the laughs through it were amazing!
