Date Night-Summer Nights

A romantic backyard "paint and sip" date night setup on the grass. Two white canvases on black table easels sit atop a white wooden pallet table. The table is decorated with a white lace runner, red fabric, rose petals, and tall white candles. A charcuterie board with fruit, crackers, and dips sits in the center.

Why We Needed an At-Home Date Night

With all the chaos in the world lately, there haven’t been many “date night opportunities.” Plus, with all the at-home time with our three boys, there definitely hasn’t been a lot of alone time for just the two of us. So, it was time to improvise!

I was desperate for some quality, quiet time with my husband, so I decided to create an “At-Home Date Night.” It went so well—and my husband loved it so much—that I’ve decided to make it a monthly tradition. I am actually super excited about coming up with different date night ideas each month and finding more opportunities to spend intentional time with him.

Setting Up Our DIY Painting Date

Originally, I was going to keep it super simple and just do a romantic candlelit dinner outside. However, I remembered a comment my husband made earlier in the week. He had seen me painting a canvas and mentioned that he would love to paint with me. So, I decided to pivot and create an at-home painting night for us!

I searched on Pinterest for inspiration but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, so I had to get creative. The best part about this idea is that it can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

Creating a Cozy Backyard Vibe

A smiling couple stands in a backyard at night holding their finished paintings. The man’s painting shows a colorful, abstract tree, while the woman’s painting features three large, bold flowers. In the background, a large wooden playhouse with a slide is visible under string lights.

I set everything up outside so we could enjoy the “cool” evening weather (well, low 90s… let’s be real, it’s Texas in the summer!). I turned on some love tunes, strung up the outdoor lights, and lit some candles. We just enjoyed each other’s company with paintbrushes in hand and yummy snacks.

I bought these adorable little painting easels and blank canvases curbside from Michaels, and I brought out some floor pillows for comfort. To lay on the ground, I used a cheap $5 rug I found at Dirt Cheap, but you could totally use a cozy blanket. I just didn’t want to sit right on the grass in my dress, and honestly, I feel like the rug created a much cozier vibe.

I grabbed some fresh red roses from H-E-B, because what’s a romantic night without fresh flowers? I also made us a yummy charcuterie board loaded with all our favorites to snack on while we painted our hearts out. And, of course, I brought out my favorite Goodwill brass candlesticks to finalize the romantic touches.

Now I need to plan for next month! I am honestly so excited about this new tradition. I truly hope I have inspired you to plan a creative date night with that special someone in your life. Click here for more creative Date Night Ideas!!
