Summer Themed-Blind Date with a Book Swap

If there is one thing that gets my heart racing as much as a perfectly executed brother’s-best-friend romance novel, it is a beautifully curated, over-the-top gift. It’s my love language. I had a blind date with a book swap event and I knew I had to show up with something over the top so of course I created this Summer Themed-Blind Date with a Book for book swap. If you have been anywhere near BookTok, Bookstagram, or Pinterest lately, you have absolutely seen the viral trend of the “Blind Date with a Book” swap. Book clubs everywhere are hosting these exchange parties, and for a very good reason! It is an incredibly fun, interactive way to share your absolute favorite reads, discover hidden gems you might never have picked up on your own, and walk away with a fresh addition to your towering TBR (To Be Read) pile.
But if you search for “Blind Date with a Book swap ideas” online, you will notice a very consistent theme: almost everyone wraps their books in traditional, plain brown kraft paper.
Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely a time and a place for the classic rustic look! I have definitely done the standard paper wrapping in the past. In fact, if you are looking for the absolute best way to fold paper around a paperback without tearing the edges, check out my Classic Brown Paper Blind Date with a Book Swap Guide. I give you all the tips for making that traditional style look chic.
However, you guys know how I operate. I am an eccentric maximalist through and through. Give me leopard print, give me checkered patterns, and give me every shade of light bubblegum pink you can find! I like to step outside the box. When it comes to gifting, I want the presentation to be just as spectacular as the gift itself.
Today, we are completely ditching the brown paper. I’ll show you how to build a non-traditional, wildly colorful, completely customized blind date with a book swap that your book club will be obsessing over for months.

What Exactly is a Blind Date with a Book Swap?
Before we dive into the glitter and the neon, let’s cover the basics. A Blind Date with a Book swap is a mystery book exchange where the title, author, and cover of the book are completely hidden from the recipient.
Instead of choosing a book based on its gorgeous cover art or a famous author’s name, participants select their next read based solely on a few vague, intriguing clues written on the outside of the packaging. These clues usually consist of the book’s genre, a few popular tropes (like “enemies to lovers” or “small town romance”), the spice level, and a one-sentence teaser that leaves them wanting more.
It completely removes the element of “judging a book by its cover.” In my virtual romance book club, Festively Booked, we are constantly trying to push each other out of our reading comfort zones. For my book club this year, instead of me choosing the book, I choose a “Festive theme” and the members of the book club get to pick whatever book they want. We all love it because we read different books and we are all find new others and books to add to our TBR’s. Want to join my book club… JOIN HERE!

Why I am Ditching the Kraft Paper
The traditional brown paper is incredibly budget-friendly and easy to source, but I found myself wanting to create an experience that felt a little more luxurious and a lot more me.
When you use an alternative vessel for your blind date with a book, you are actually giving a double gift! The packaging itself becomes something the recipient can keep, reuse, and enjoy long after they have finished reading the final chapter.
Creating a non-traditional swap means hunting for unique containers. Think about vintage floral scarves wrapped using the Furoshiki method, vibrant makeup bags, woven summer totes, or even beautifully painted thrifted jewelry boxes. It elevates the entire concept from a simple book exchange to a curated care package.
The Thrill of the Thrift: Finding the Perfect Vessel
My entire concept for this specific summer-themed book swap started where all my best ideas start: the thrift store. (You can actually watch my entire shopping vlog and the chaotic process of putting this together in the video at the top of this post!)
While doing my usual “Sunday Reset” and planning out my week, I decided to hit the thrift store looking for inspiration. If you follow my Thrifting Thursday series, you know I am absolutely not afraid to dig through the Goodwill bins—especially those massive outlet bins down in Greenspoint where the real treasures hide.
But this time, I found magic right on the standard shelves. I stumbled across a bright, bold, pink sequined bag that proudly declared, “I Need Vitamin Sea.” The moment I saw it, I knew it was the absolute perfect vessel for a summer-themed romance swap. It was bright, it was kitschy, and it screamed modern maximalism.
Once you have your vessel, the rest of the project naturally falls into place. The bag dictates the theme, the color scheme, and the vibe of the book you choose to place inside it.
A Quick, Mind-Blowing Thrifting Fun Fact!
Since we are on the topic of shopping for book swaps, I have to share a random fun fact that completely blew my mind this week. If you look at the photos I included, you will see a massive display of books. You guys, TJ Maxx is currently selling brand new, literal best-selling books at thrift store prices!
I am talking about top-tier, wildly popular BookTok titles sitting right there on the shelf for a fraction of the bookstore cost. If you are preparing for a book exchange and want to gift a brand-new copy of a beloved favorite without breaking the bank, you need to run to your local TJ Maxx immediately. It is a total game-changer for book club girls on a budget!
Curating the Perfect “Vitamin Sea” Book Swap Bag
When you are building your non-traditional swap, the golden rule is to pick a book that perfectly correlates with your item, and then tie the entire package together with a cohesive color scheme or theme. Since my bag was all about the “Vitamin Sea,” I leaned heavily into bright pinks, purples, and tropical summer vibes.
Here is a detailed breakdown of exactly what went into my Blind Date with a Book care package:
1. The Book: Rules for the Summer
You cannot have a summer-themed bag without the ultimate summer romance! I chose Rules for the Summer by Meghan Quinn. If you have not read her yet, you are seriously missing out on some of the best banter in the contemporary romance genre. We absolutely love Meghan Quinn books around here, and this one has been sitting at the very top of my TBR list. It delivers exactly the kind of laugh-out-loud, swoon-worthy escapism you want while sitting by the pool. [You can grab a copy of Rules for the Summer right here!]
2. The Pampering: Face Masks are a Must
In my opinion, a face mask is an absolute, non-negotiable requirement for any blind date with a book swap. Reading is the ultimate form of self-care, so why not pair it with some literal skincare? I always throw in the [Que Bella Mud Masks]. For this bag, I snagged the Cleansing Pink Clay and the Relaxing Lavender masks. Not only are they amazing for your skin, but the pink and purple packaging matched my aesthetic perfectly.
3. The Glow: Tropical Body Scrub
To keep the “Vitamin Sea” theme going strong, I wanted an item that felt like a tropical vacation. You can never, ever go wrong with a high-quality body scrub. I added the [Tree Hut Moonlight Glow Shea Sugar Scrub]. It smells heavenly, leaves your skin glowing, and the deep purple jar was exactly what I needed to balance out the bright pink sequins of the bag.
4. The Sweet Treat: Gummy Candies
No reading session is complete without a little sugar! I tossed in a bag of Favorite Day Summer Pops gummy candies from Target. The packaging was purple, the candies were shaped like little popsicles, and it brought a fun, youthful energy to the whole gift.
(Pro-Tip: If you are loving this bag concept but you don’t have the time to go digging through thrift stores this week, do not stress! I actually found a incredibly Similar Summer Pouch right here online that would work beautifully for this exact setup!)
Confessions of a Tired PTO Mom
Now, let’s have a little reality check, because I always want to be completely transparent with you guys. In a perfect, meticulously planned world, my original vision for this book swap bag was much grander.
I had grand plans to create a gorgeous, custom DIY Junk Bookmark using vintage ephemera, lace, and leftover scrapbook materials. I also fully intended to hand-make a beautiful, beaded bag charm to hang off the zipper of the pink pouch to give it that extra customized flair.
But let’s be real. I am currently the Vice President of the PTO at Calfee Middle School, and this book swap happened to land squarely in the middle of Teacher Appreciation Week. Between organizing the daily breakfasts for the staff, coordinating the caterers, and running my son Christian back and forth to his junior high mascot training and district competitions, I was in absolute survival mode. I simply ran out of hours in the day!
I had to give myself a little grace, abandon the DIY plans, and hit up Target and Marshalls to curate a completely store-bought kit instead. And you know what? It still turned out incredibly cute. Sometimes, store-bought is perfectly fine, and we do not have to do it all!
(Side note: If you are a fellow room mom or PTO member and you ever find yourself needing last-minute, wildly creative teacher gift ideas, you absolutely have to see the Teacher Appreciation Checkered Corkboard tutorial and these adorable Teacher Appreciation Lip Gloss Charms we put together this year. They were a massive hit!)
5 Alternative Packaging Ideas for Your Book Swap
If you want to ditch the brown paper but you aren’t sure where to start, here are five unique ways to package your next blind date with a book:
- The Furoshiki Fabric Wrap: Head to a thrift store and buy a beautiful vintage silk scarf or a piece of boldly patterned fabric. Wrap the book using the traditional Japanese Furoshiki folding method. It looks incredibly elegant, and the recipient gets a gorgeous hair accessory or neck scarf!
- The Canvas Tote: Buy a plain, inexpensive canvas tote bag and use iron-on patches, fabric paint, or embroidery to customize it. Slip the book and a few goodies inside. It is the perfect reusable library bag.
- The Hollowed-Out Vintage Book: This takes a little DIY effort, but taking an old, falling-apart encyclopedia and hollowing out the center to hide a brand-new paperback is the ultimate bookish surprise.
- The Woven Picnic Basket: For a cozy, cottagecore vibe, find a small thrifted wicker basket. Line it with a checkered napkin, place the book inside with a box of premium tea and a jar of local honey, and tie it shut with a ribbon.
- The Themed Gift Box: Hit the craft store for a sturdy, decorative photo box. Fill it with crinkle paper and create a highly specific theme—like a “Midnight Thriller Box” containing a mystery novel, a mini flashlight, dark chocolate, and black coffee beans.

How to Host Your Own Epic Book Swap Party
If you are looking at all these fun packages and thinking, “I need to do this with my friends immediately,” I highly encourage you to host your own book swap party! It is one of the easiest and most rewarding events you can organize. Whether you are hosting a formal gathering for your established book club or just inviting a few girlfriends over to your living room, here is my step-by-step guide to making it unforgettable.
Step 1: Set the Rules and Send the Invites
First, decide what kind of books are allowed. Can they be gently used from personal shelves, or do they need to be brand new? (I personally love allowing gently used books—it is eco-friendly and free!).
Next, pick a theme. You can do a general “Bring Your Favorite 5-Star Read,” or narrow it down to genres like “Swoony Summer Romances” or “Chilling Winter Thrillers.” Make sure your invitations explicitly state that the books must be wrapped in a non-traditional way and completely hide the title and author.
Step 2: The Art of the Clue Card
The most important part of a blind date with a book is the teaser. You want to give your guests enough information to pique their interest, but not so much that they immediately guess the title.
I recommend listing:
- The Genre: (e.g., Contemporary Romance, Cozy Mystery, High Fantasy)
- 3 Key Tropes: (e.g., Forced Proximity, Grumpy x Sunshine, Found Family)
- The Spice Level: Use a scale of 1 to 5 chili peppers! This is crucial so people know exactly what they are getting into.
- A One-Sentence Hook: (e.g., “She thought she was moving to the big city for a fresh start, until she realized her new roommate was her brother’s infuriatingly handsome best friend.”)
To make this super easy for you and your guests, I have designed a gorgeous, printable tag that you can use! Just head over to my [Free Downloadable Blind Date with a Book Swap Clue Card] post, print them out on heavy cardstock, and tie them to your bags or baskets.
Step 3: Choose Your Exchange Format
There are a few different ways to actually conduct the swap at the party:
- The White Elephant Method: Everyone draws a number. Person #1 picks a book and unwraps it. Person #2 can either steal Person #1’s book or pick a wrapped one from the pile. This is by far the most chaotic and hilarious way to do it!
- Speed Dating: Set up all the wrapped books on a large table. Set a timer for 5 minutes, and let everyone walk around, read the clues, and pick up the packages. When the timer goes off, everyone stands by their chosen book. If two people want the same book, they have to rock-paper-scissors for it!
- The Secret Matchmaker: Before the party, draw names out of a hat. Each person is secretly assigned to curate a book specifically tailored to their drawn person’s tastes.
Step 4: Food, Drinks, and Vibe
You cannot host a bookish event without amazing snacks! Keep it simple so you can actually enjoy your own party. I love setting up a massive charcuterie board, a few different types of sparkling lemonades, and a tray of easy desserts.
We actually hosted one of my “Festive Fun” DIY crafting events at Granny Camp over in Huntsville back in April, and I learned that the best parties are the ones where people can casually graze on food while they chat. Put on a great 90s alternative playlist, light a few candles, and let the literary debates begin.

A Vital Tool: The 2026 Vintage Inspired Library Card
If you are participating in a book swap, that means your TBR pile is about to grow. To keep track of all the amazing new books you are going to discover, you absolutely need a reading log.
I recently designed a 2026 Vintage Inspired Library Card Bookmark. It looks exactly like the retro, stamped checkout cards we used to have in elementary school libraries, but it functions as a bookmark where you can log the titles, dates, and star ratings of every book you read this year. It is the perfect blend of Y2K nostalgia and practical organization. Make sure you click over and grab that free download to keep in your new swap book!
A Quick Summer Aesthetic Update
Okay, before we wrap this up, I cannot post these close-up photos of my hands holding the books without giving a quick shoutout to my current summer nails! If you look closely at the photos, you will see I went completely rogue this month.
I asked my nail tech for a neon green, bright ocean blue, light bubblegum pink, and bold black-and-white checkered combination. It is loud, it is fun, and it perfectly matches the vibrant, eccentric maximalist energy of this entire book swap project. Sometimes you just have to lean into the chaos and embrace the color!

Frequently Asked Questions About Book Swaps
Because I get so many DMs about hosting these events, I wanted to address a few of the most common questions:
Q: Do I have to buy a brand new book for a swap? A: Not at all! Unless your specific book club establishes a “new books only” rule, passing along a gently loved, dog-eared paperback from your own shelf is highly encouraged. It is a wonderful way to recycle literature and share a story that already holds a special place in your heart.
Q: What if someone unwraps a book they have already read? A: This happens occasionally, especially in groups where everyone shares similar tastes! The best way to handle this is to implement a “Swap and Steal” rule. If you open a book you’ve read, you can trade with the center pile, or kindly ask if anyone else wants to trade with you at the end of the game.
Q: How much should I spend on the “extras” in the bag? A: Set a clear budget for your group beforehand. Usually, a $15-$25 limit for the entire package (including the book) is the sweet spot. Remember, the thrift store and the dollar sections at Target are your best friends for finding cute, inexpensive fillers like face masks and candy.
Q: Can I do this virtually? A: Yes! My virtual club, Festively Booked, does this all the time. We use an online Secret Santa generator to draw names, and then we mail our curated, wrapped books to each other across the country. We all wait to open our packages on camera during our last Thursday of the month Zoom call. It is pure joy!
