DIY Junk Purse: The Ultimate Y2K Maximalist Bag Guide

Let’s get one thing absolutely straight before we dive into this project: the “quiet luxury” aesthetic is entirely lost on me. I do not want a sleek, minimalist, beige handbag that looks like it belongs in a sterile modern art museum or that blends into my wall when I hang it on my hook in the entryway. This bag needs to announce my arrival from three rooms away. It should jingle, clank, and look like a 1999 time capsule exploded all over it in the absolute best way possible. If you want to see exactly how it’s done, just scroll down for the full video tutorial. [VIDEO AT THE BOTTOM]
If you loved the DIY Junk Bookmark tutorial we just did (and if you haven’t read that yet, what are you doing.. YOU’RE GOING TO BE OBSESSED!? Read the DIY Junk Bookmark Post Here! Buckle up. We are taking that exact same eccentric maximalist energy, scaling it up, and slapping it onto an accessory you can actually wear out in public. This isn’t just a purse; it’s a lifestyle choice. It’s loud, it’s unapologetic, and perfectly encapsulates the entire Festive Fun brand energy.
We are going to cover everything from sourcing the perfect denim base to layering patches, attaching the most nostalgic Y2K charms (yes, there is a Tamagotchi involved), and creating a masterpiece that will have everyone stopping you in the grocery store to ask where you bought it. Grab an iced coffee, put on your favorite 90s boyband playlist, and let’s get into the glorious chaos of making a DIY Junk Purse.

The Philosophy of “Junk”: Collecting Your Life
If you are new to the eccentric maximalist side of the internet, you might be wondering why on earth anyone would want to carry around something called a junk purse. I call it a “junk” purse not because it belongs in the trash, but because the entire point of this project is to collect and add random, personal junk that you actually love.
It’s an exercise in taking all your favorite, seemingly disjointed things and mashing them together into a cohesive, wearable piece of art. The aesthetic is heavily giving late 90s and early 2000s Y2K nostalgia, and I am absolutely here for it. But more than that, it’s a living scrapbook.
On my bag, you’ll see a few things I can’t even link for you because they are truly one-of-a-kind “junk” treasures. I have these amazing vintage Ford keychains that I hunted down at the antique show in Round Top. I also have this chunky, perfectly distressed metal heart keychain that I found completely by accident at a local thrift store.
That is the magic of the Junk Purse! You are supposed to add random junk you’ve collected over the years. It’s about rejecting the idea that our accessories have to be serious. Every month I do a local event called Festive Fun, so why would I carry a boring bag? This purse is a conversation starter. It’s a dopamine hit every time you look down at it.
Sourcing the Base: The Perfect “Junk Bag”
You cannot build a proper 90s tribute without the right foundation. For this specific project, that foundation is denim. Acid-wash denim, to be exact.
You can use any old purse you have lying around, but if you want to capture the true essence of the Junk Purse, you need something with a little grit. I go absolutely feral for the Goodwill bins down in the Houston area. There is nothing quite like digging through a literal trough of discarded items, fighting for your life among the vintage t-shirts, to find the perfect blank canvas. PS. If you new to the goodwill bins I have the PERFECT Houston Goodwill Bins: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide
When I found this incredible little acid-wash denim purse, I immediately knew it needed to be aggressively bedazzled. It’s the perfect size…not too bulky, but just big enough to shove my wallet, my keys, a plethora of lip products, and a spicy contemporary romance paperback inside. Honestly finding the purse has inspired me to create the Junk bag!
If you don’t have a local thrift store that yields good denim bags, don’t worry! I have scoured the internet and found the exact one for you. The Perfect Acid-Wash Denim Purse Base

The Anatomy of Maximum Chaos: The Supply List
Creating a Junk Purse is an art, not a science. But if you want to recreate the exact maximalist masterpiece I made, here is a detailed breakdown of everything you need to bring this vision to life.
The Heat and The Hold: The Crucial Tool
Before we get to the fun stuff, we need to talk about logistics. You can try to use your iron at home but you just want to ensure it gets to a high temperature to activate the glue in the patches.
- The Mini Cricut Heat Press: This is the absolute MVP of this project. Because purses have pockets, zippers, and weird seams, a tiny heat press allows you to get perfectly flat, even heat on tiny patches without melting your bag’s hardware. Mini Cricut Heat Press
The Patches: Graphic, Spooky, and Sweet

Important Note: Make sure you are buying patches that adhere via heat (iron-on)! Unless you specifically want to spend hours hand-sewing through thick denim (my fingers ache just thinking about it), heat-transfer is the way to go.
- The Large Star Patch: Every 90s kid wanted to be Avril Lavigne, and nothing says pop-punk princess like a giant black sequined star. Large Black Sequin Star Patch (not mine exact but similar)
- The Spooky-Cute Horror Patches: I found this amazing pink Ghostface (Scream) patch with a heart background, and a Jason mask patch. Pink Ghostface Heart Patch Jason Mask Patch
- The “Vintage Soul” Leopard Patch: Because leopard print is a neutral in my house, and it ties the whole eccentric vibe together. Vintage Inspired Patches
- The Checkered Details: I used a cute little checkered flower patch to add graphic contrast. Checkered Flower Patch
- The Smiley Face: You can’t have a 90s throwback without a classic smiley face. Classic Smiley Face Patch
- The Mini Pink Hearts: Sprinkled wherever there was an empty patch of denim that felt a little too boring. Mini Pink Heart Patches
The Hardware & Charms: Make Some Noise
When you walk, this bag should sound like a treasure chest is opening. I actually made two custom beaded charms for this bag to really amp up the volume.
- The Tamagotchi: The Holy Grail. Mine is pink with little green details, and yes, I absolutely feed it when it beeps. Classic Pink Tamagotchi
- The Mini 8-Ball Keychain: “Reply hazy, try again.” A classic staple. Mini 8-Ball Keychain
- Heavy-Duty Fishing Line: Standard string will snap. You need fishing line to hold the weight of your DIY charms. Heavy Duty Fishing Line
- The Bead Mix: I used an unhinged mix of pony beads, alphabet letter beads, and nostalgic 90s beads to make two massive charm strings. Classic Pony Beads Alphabet Letter Beads 90s Nostalgia Bead Mix
- Gold Chain: Y’all know my love for layers and I found this 3 layer gold chain. It’s actually for jeans, but why can’t you use it on a jumbo purse. Gold Chain
- Rope Tassel: I found this pink tassel and I thought she was cute, but they have so many colors options! I have one of these on my purse for the school too. Pink Charm Tassel
The Secret Weapon: The Hair Bow Hack
That massive, gorgeous leopard print bow with black ruffled trim hanging off the handle? It’s a hair bow. I literally just took a giant hair bow with an alligator clip on the back and clamped it directly onto the handle of the purse. Large Leopard Print Ruffle Hair Bow I did also find this checked key I thought was adorable. Checkered Key Chain

Step-by-Step Construction: How to Build Your Junk Purse
Step 1: The Layout (The Most Important Step) Do not plug in your Cricut press yet! Lay your denim bag flat and start playing with your patch placement. Take a photo of your layout with your phone so you remember exactly where everything goes.
Step 2: Press and Secure Turn on your Mini Cricut Heat Press. Because it’s small, you can maneuver around the zippers and pockets perfectly. Place a thin cloth over the patch to protect it from melting, and press down firmly. Let the heat do all the work. (Again, you can hand-sew these if you are a glutton for punishment and want that visible stitched look, but the heat press saves hours of time!).
Step 3: Layer the Chains and Charms Drape heavy gold craft chains across the front of the bag. Then, clip your Tamagotchi, your thrifted keychains from Round Top, your 8-ball, and your two massive, custom-beaded fishing line charms onto the side hardware rings. Let them dangle and tangle together.
Step 4: Clip on the Bow Take your leopard print hair bow and clip it right onto the base of the handle strap. Fluff up the loops so it looks huge and dramatic.

Endless Possibilities: Ideas to “Junk Up” Your Own Bag
The best part about this DIY is that the possibilities are literally endless. Because it’s your personal “junk,” no two bags will ever look the same. If you are looking for more ideas on what to add to your bag, here are some fun ways to customize it:
- Vintage Brooches: Raid your grandmother’s jewelry box or an antique store for massive, sparkly rhinestone brooches and pin them right through the denim.
- Enamel Pins: Cover the straps in enamel pins from places you’ve traveled or bands you love.
- Safety Pin Art: Connect dozens of safety pins together to make grungy, punk-rock chains hanging from the zippers.
- Sew On Lace or Ruffles: If you actually do like sewing, whip-stitch some vintage lace trim around the pockets to contrast the acid-wash denim.
- Friendship Bracelets: Tie old friendship bracelets or Taylor Swift Eras Tour bracelets to the handle!
What Is Inside My Junk Purse
You can’t have a bag this fabulous on the outside and carry boring things on the inside.
1. The DIY Junk Bookmark My custom beaded, scrap-fabric junk bookmark slides perfectly into the side pocket of this purse. It has the same leopard print, the same checkered fabric, and the same maximalist beads. Make Your Own DIY Junk Bookmark Here!
2. Summer Fridays Lip Balm (The Charmed Edition) The charmed version of the Summer Fridays lip butter balm fits the Junk Purse aesthetic so perfectly it hurts. It looks like a 90s gloss and makes me feel put together even when I’m wearing sweatpants. Summer Fridays Lip Balm – Charmed
