Teen Boy Bedroom

Dalton is our easiest and simplest kid in so many ways. In this case it truly worked in my favor. Unlike my other two boys who will tell you every little detail they want in their room… Dalton had full trust in me and didn’t care what I created. With that being said Dalton is also very simple. So I wanted to create a simple, yet age appropriate, but moody room for our moody teenager. And, well folks… I can tell you, mission accomplished… he has made his bed everyday and kept his room spotless… HE ABSOLUTELY LOVES EVERYTHING ABOUT IT… which makes my mom heart so happy. [I have linked everything at the bottom of this post.]

“After” photo of Dalton’s Room Transformation

Below is the before view. There isn’t anything wrong with this… to me personally it just lacks CHARACTER. When our house flooded in February 2021, I had some collabs with a few companies during the build back journey so most rooms were just thrown together using random things from the collabs. We have been slowly going back through each of the rooms and personalizing them to everyone’s personalities.

Before I start any space I start with a “Mood Board”. Below is my mood board for Dalton’s bedroom. A mood board helps me visualize everything and not waste time buying things that no one likes. So one thing I knew for sure was we wanted to upgrade his bed from a twin to a full size. So first thing I did was find a bed frame that I wanted. I feel like beds are easy and they are pretty neutral. But if you are fully creating a space… I highly recommend picking your rug first. Your rug is your focal point of your room. So you can choose everything else in the space to ensure it matches. For instance, your wallpaper, wall color, bedding, sheets, and decor. I create all my mood boards in CANVA.

The first thing I did in the room was add the shiplap panels that I found at the hardware store. I knew I definitely wanted some texture in the space and adding an accent wall would achieve that. I used my jigsaw to make the cuts from the bottom of the panels.

Uncaulked seams

The key when adding an accent wall is making sure you caulk all the seams. If you look at the below picture compared to the picture above, you can tell that it’s a more seamless line on the top and sides. You want “added” texture so that it appears to be “PART” of the wall.

Now we are getting to the fun part. Picking a color for the accent wall is one of my favorite parts. I went with TRICORN BLACK which is SHERWIN WILLIAMS’ blackest black. There are no hues of any sort… it’s just BLACK! Because of the color scheme I was using, I wanted to make sure it was BLACK. If this was being done in a smaller room, you could honestly just paint the accent wall the same color as the other walls. Luckily Dalton’s room has three big windows with a lot of natural light so the black doesn’t make the room seem small.

Adding all the final touches to the space and truly seeing it come together is so satisfying. I found this bed, Teejay Metal bed, on sale at Wayfair for under $130 and the mattress is a Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Relief from Overstock.com. I feel like the metal bed gives the space a vintage and manly vibe. This adorable rug is an outdoor rug from Walmart and is seriously one of my favorite rugs. Black and White Striped Outdoor Rug. I wanted to add some personal touches so I did go and add 14×18 frames and let Dalton pick the pictures he wanted in the frames. I made the prints black and white to fit the vibe of the space. I feel like they add a touch of elegance to the space, especially with the curtains. I truly love how this space turned out and I’m so thankful that Dalton loves it too.
